Gary is the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of The Cold War Museum in Vint Hill, Virginia. He is also the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Cold War Theme Study, which assists the National Park Service in identifying historic Cold War sites for preservation. Gary consulted on Stephen Spielberg's 2015 film Bridge of Spies, which recounted the story of his father's capture by Soviet Russia and his return to the U.S. after an exchange with Soviet spy Rudolf Abel.
